War, bin, werde sein: Revisiting the 1907 International Socialist Congress in Stuttgart.
This proposal centers on the 1907 International Socialist Congress. In activating the historical memory of this gathering and its solidarity around anti-colonialism, women’s suffrage, and pacifism, it is essential to highlight the role of Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Dietz (1843-1922). In addition to being the head of the Congress’ organizing committee, he was the founder of Dietz Verlag, one of the strongest publishers of texts on socialism and communism in Germany. Dietz Verlag played a fundamental part in the 1907 Congress. For instance,
Die Gleicheit, a newspaper published by Dietz and edited by socialist and feminist Clara Zetkin (1857-1933), was adopted as the common publication for the International Socialist Women’s Congress (also held in 1907). In addition, Dietz helped facilitate the presence of delegates from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, hailing representatives from South Africa, India, and Argentina that made Stuttgart a key setting for anti-imperial discussions worldwide. Finally, many of the main speakers at the 1907 Congress also published influential monographs with Dietz Verlag, such as Rosa Luxemburg, August Bebel, and Karl Kautsky, among others.
